Vintage Uncle Floyd Tee Shirt worn by Johnny Ramone.
Pre-dating both Saturday Night Live and Pee-wee Herman, The Uncle Floyd Show was an independently produced, daily broadcast TV program that combined elements of traditional variety and old-fashioned children’s television. The result was both cutting-edge and classic at the same time, appealing to adults despite its kiddy show trappings. Uncle Floyd’s on-air interaction with off-camera cast and crew set a tone that others in the industry would later draw upon. Floyd's right hand man was the memorable, precocious-but-lovable ventriloquist puppet “Oogie”, who—along with Uncle Floyd himself—was depicted on the popular T-shirts sold to fans at live performances.
Making its debut in 1974, the Uncle Floyd show soon developed a devoted cult following throughout the NY/NJ area. By the late 70s it was a favorite of David Bowie, John Lennon, Iggy Pop and The Ramones. Bowie even wrote and recorded a song (entitled “Slip Away”) in homage to the show, naming memorable characters like “Oogie” and “Bones Boy” within the lyrics.
The Uncle Floyd Show’s popularity was increased by eclectic, contemporary musical guests. The Ramones appeared numerous times, (more than any other band), in a talented pool of NY/NJ based artists that included The Misfits, The Smithereens, Cyndi Lauper, and Bon Jovi.
The Ramones gave props to the Show in a number of places including the song "It's Not My Place (In the 9 to 5 World)” on their 1981 “Pleasant Dreams” album. Joey would occasionally wear an Uncle Floyd Show button on his leather jacket, and legendary Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone was often seen (and photographed), wearing an Uncle Floyd Show T-shirt in concert.
Johnny even immortalized his “Uncle Floyd Show” T-shirt as wardrobe in not one, but two, classic Ramones music videos. The Phil Spector produced “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School” and “Do You Remember Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio.” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NF--bHavJs
